Despite Shorto (2006) and Ferlus (2007)'s glosses, the respective Proto-Mon-Khmer and Proto-Vietic etyma might have originally referred to another kind of fruit resembling the New World imported guava (Psidium guajava).

TDP separates the "guava" sense from the "farang" sense, though they are likely etymologically equivalent (guavas would be a very foreign fruit to the Thais).
