Etimoloji
From Middle Dutch malaetsch, extended form (with the suffix -s) of Middle Dutch malate, malade (“leprous”), itself from Old French malade (“ill, sick”). The specific use for “leprous” may already have existed in French, cf. Middle French grosse maladie (“leprosy”). See also Melaten, a medieval leprosarium in Cologne.
