Yidişשלימיל
ineffectual, inept person, bungler
köken: Unknown. One proposed etymology is that it comes from Hebrew שלא מועיל (“who is not helpful”), though such an etymology would be expected to yield *shloyml or *shlemoyl. Another is that it comes from the Biblical figure Shelumiel ben Tzurishadai, though it is unknown how he would have come to be associated with bungling.

Etimoloji

19th century, from Yiddish שלימיל (shlimil). Further origin uncertain; see the Yiddish for more. The rather odd spelling with -ih- follows the use of Adelbert von Chamisso in his well-known novella Peter Schlemihl (1813). Von Chamisso probably avoided Schlemiel because it could have suggested a trisyllabic pronunciation as in Gabriel (though he might have spelt *Schlemil).
