köken: From mätä (“rot”) + kuu (“month”), a calque of Swedish rötmånad (“rot month”), from Danish, from Middle Low German rodendage (“dog days”), i.e. the days after the Heliacal rising of the Dog Star (Sirius), which was an important phenomenon in the astronomy of the olden times. The Middle Low German word rode (“dog”) was mistranslated into Danish as roden (“rot”).
