Probably from கொழு (koḻu, “fat, fresh, fertile, beautiful”), ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *koẓ- (“young, tender, fresh”). Cognate with Malayalam കൊഴുന്ത് (koḻuntŭ). The 'flame' sense is a semantic broadening arising from its resemblance to a tender shoot.
