Tanım

•The seventh letter of the Russian alphabet, called ё (jo) and written in the Cyrillic script.

Etimoloji

Stressed [ʲe] regularly developed into [ʲɵ] before hard consonants. The letter ё (jo) was later created to reflect this, the diaeresis probably being inspired by the German use of diaeresis for umlaut. Its first appearance in typography was in 1797, introduced by the writer Nikolay Karamzin.
