Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *xmura (“a cloud”), related to *xmuriti (“to make cloudy”). Cognates include Polish pochmurny (“cloudy”), Ukrainian похму́рий (poxmúryj, “cloudy, gloomy”). Possibly related to па́смурный (pásmurnyj).
