Inherited from Old East Slavic подъшьва (podŭšĭva, “sole (bottom); foundation”), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *šiti (“to sew”). Doublet of подо́шва (podóšva, “sole, (mountain) foot”). Compare typologically Latin solum (see also English soil) related to solea (whence English sole).
