PIE word *móri Inherited from Old East Slavic море (more), from Proto-Slavic *moře, from Proto-Indo-European *móri, whence English mer- and marsh and through Latin marine, maritime. The astronomical sense is a calque of New Latin mare (“sea”), with which it is cognate.
