Literally, “father of donkeys” (or, less literally, “parent of dunces”), with burro (“donkey”) here meaning unintelligent person. A metaphor for wordbooks as parental figures teaching their young children (the ignorant) about the world through short descriptions of fundamental concepts, and subsequent vocabulary expansion.
