First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 모ᄌᆞ라다 (Yale: mwocolata). Probably a compound of Middle Korean 몯 (Yale: mwot) (modern 못 (mot)) and ᄌᆞ라다 (Yale: colata) (modern 자라다 (jarada)).
