•unflavored white bread in the pain de mie style, most often Japanese milk bread, frequently baked as a Pullman loaf or sandwich loaf
Etimoloji
Compound of 食 (shoku, “eating, food”) + パン (pan, “bread”). Listed in some references as a contraction of 本食パン (honshoku pan, literally “main food bread”) or of 主食用のパン (shushokuyō no pan, literally “bread for use as a staple food”), with the term possibly gaining currency as a way of disambiguating from other senses of パン (pan), such as "cooking pan". Attested since at least 1890.
