/sen/ → /seni/ → /zeni/ From Old Japanese, shifted from 銭 (sen), itself from Middle Chinese 錢 (MC dzjen). First cited in the Nihon Shoki with the ideographic spelling 銭. Later cited in the 竹取物語 (Taketori Monogatari, “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter”) from the late 800s, early 900s, with the unvoiced pronunciation seni.
