/mauɕi mauɕi/ → /mɔːɕi mɔːɕi/ → /moːɕi moːɕi/ Reduplication of 申(もう)し (mōshi, 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 申(もう)す (mōsu, “to speak”, humble)), literally, “speaking speaking”. Used in the first telephone experiment in Japan, similar to English “testing, testing” used when testing audio equipment.
