Compound of 格(かく) (kaku, “grammatical case”) + 助(じょ)詞(し) (joshi, “grammatical particle”). Coined by linguist 山(やま)田(だ)孝(よし)雄(お) (Yamada Yoshio) in his work 日(に)本(ほん)文(ぶん)法(ぽう)論(ろん) (Nihon Bunpō-ron, “Treatise on Japanese Grammar”), published starting in 1902.
