Composed by clipping and fusion, of ロン (ron) from ロンドン (Rondon, “London”) + パリ (Pari, “Paris”), from the idea that one eye was looking at London while the other eye was looking at Paris. First cited to a text from 1965, but the term was apparently popularized in the 1950s.
