From ハブ (habu, “someone left out of a group”) + る (-ru, verb-forming suffix), the former a clipping of 省(はぶ)き (habuki, “omission”), the 連(れん)用(よう)形(けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 省(はぶ)く (habuku, “to omit”).
