Etimoloji
Attested from the 11th century. Compound of 赤 (aka, “red”) + 子 (ko, “child”) with ko to go by rendaku (連濁), referring to the reddish appearance of newborns; compare 赤ん坊 (akanbo), 赤ちゃん (aka-chan). Alternatively, perhaps a shift from obsolete 嬰孩 (angko “baby”) or アッ孫 (akko “grandchild”).
