Etymology tree Proto-Berber *a-zănkəḍ Medieval Tashelhit اَزَنْكُاضْ (azenkʷaḍ) Tashelhit aznkʷḍbor. Hebrew איזנקוט Borrowed from Tashelhit aznkʷḍ (“gazelle; young noble man”). Compare the Moroccan Arabic names أزنكض (ʔazenkaḍ), إزنكاض (ʔizenkāḍ). The initial element was reinterpreted as German Eisen (“iron”), resulting in the apparent meaning of "iron feces" (Eisen Kot) in German.
