köken: Literally, “election sausage”, from a custom that arose in Galicia (southern part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth annexed by Austria in the partitions) at the turn of the 19th century. Candidates organized large communal feasts where free sausage and vodka were offered to the public in order to gather votes.
