From salo (“deep forest”) + -nen. Attested since the 16th century, originally in South Karelia. Later attested in the coming centuries also in other regions, developing from e.g. farm names. but became common during the adoption (in Western Finland) and Fennicization of surnames in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
