muuru- + vesi (“water, lake”), originally the name of a lake. Originally from Muurue, from muura- + -ue: *Muuruevesi > Muuruvesi. Supported by the fact that the name Murainmaa (*Muurainmaa) is found in a 1561 source for a place near this lake.
