Etimoloji
Originally *Madelahti, from made (“burbot”) + lahti (“bay”). The original Finnish d sound /ð/ was borrowed into Swedish dh, which was later regularly lost, and this form was then reborrowed back into Finnish and folk-etymologically interpreted as maa (“land”) + lahti (“bay”).
