From Proto-Finnic *ëtra, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ēþrǭ (compare Swedish åder (“vein”), Old English ædre (“river, vein”)). Originally the name of the river (Eurajoki) that passes through the village, and the parish/municipality was then named after it. Doublet of Aura.
