From Middle Dutch *loef, from Old Dutch *luof, from Proto-Germanic *lōf-, from Proto-Indo-European *lāp-, *lēp-, *lep- (“flat”). Although attested only very late, its origin in Old Dutch is relatively certain as Old French borrowed lof from it.
