From Middle Dutch kinnebacke, from Old Dutch kinnebaco; first element from the root of modern kin (“chin”), second element from Proto-West Germanic *bakka, a substrate word of unknown affiliation; compare Latin bucca (“cheek”) and Ancient Greek φαγών (phagṓn, “jaw”); if related to the latter, they could both be from a late Proto-Indo-European *bʰagn- (“cheek”).
