Etimoloji

First attested as IJmuiden in 1848. Compound of IJ (a hydronym) + muide (“mouth (of a river)”); the -n is following toponyms such as Muiden, where it indicates an old dative plural. The name was coined by lawyer and journalist Simon Vissering.
