First attested as arnemuda in 1233. Compound of the hydronym Arne and the dative plural form of muide (“mouth”). The hydronym Arne either derives from Proto-Indo-European *er- (“move”) or from an older form Rinne through metathesis. See also Zealandic Erremu, Erremuje.
