Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *pɯɡ): semantic 虫 + phonetic 畐 (OC *pʰrɯɡ, *bɯɡ). An extinct pictogram (象形) of a bat occurs in the oracle bone and bronze scripts; it is thought to write this word but is not ancestral to the character 蝠. From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pək (“bat”).
