毛 refers to the furry appearance of mold. Compare Mandarin 長毛／长毛 (zhǎngmáo, “to grow mold”). Alternatively, 毛 may come from 殕 (*p- > m-). Compare Min Nan 上殕 (chhiūⁿ-phú, “to become moldy”). 毛 is commonly believed to be from English mold, but this is unlikely.
