Phono-semantic compound (形聲 /形声, OC *sŋra): semantic 木 + abbreviated phonetic 疏 (OC *sŋra, *sŋras). Traditionally thought to be related to 疏 (OC *sŋra, “distant; sparse”), as compared to 篦 (OC *piː, *bis, “fine-tooth comb”) (Shiming; Wang, 1982).
