Pictogram (象形): a woven mat with ornament. Later, a phonetic 石 (OC *djaɡ) was added and the image of the mat corrupted into 巾 (“cloth”). In the small seal script, 石 had corrupted into , leading Shuowen to interpret it as abbreviated phonetic 庶 (OC *hljaɡs) + semantic 巾.
