The original form 表子 (“lit. a person outside (the man's home)”) is probably an antonym of 內子／内子 (nèizǐ, “wife”), refers to a woman who was not a man's wife but had had sexual relationships with him, initially may be used to refer to a mistress, but later it began to be used to refer to prostitutes.
