Ideogrammic compound (會意 /会意): a hand 爪 grabbing a criminal slave 大 by their braids 幺. In Warring States texts the bottom of the character was often simplified, making the character interchangeable with 系. Cognate with 何 (OC *ɡaːl, “what; where; why; how”). See there for more.
