Partie de la mer Baltique, qui sépare la Finlande de l’Estonie, bordé par la Finlande au nord, l’Estonie au sud, et la Russie à l’est. Il communique à l’ouest avec la mer Baltique et le golfe de Botnie.
köken: From Suomen (“of Finland; of Finland Proper”, genitive) + lahti (“bay”). First attested in 1844, but already established in other languages in the 18th century. A 1539 map already calls it the Mare Finonicum (literally “(the) Finnish sea”).
