From the name of the Aghstafa river, from ağsu (“drinkable water”) + tafa (“noisy”), meaning "noisy river". Various folk etymologies interpret it as Oğuz (“Oghuz”) + tayfa (“tribe”) or Oğuz (“Oghuz”) + təpə (“hill”).
