Literally, “sour makes merry”. Refers to the positive effects of sour foods on appetite and digestion. Generally, German cuisine is fond of and rich in sour dishes, compare Sauerkraut, Sauerbraten, Saurer Hering, etc. Probably originated in Czech (kyselo dělá veselo), where it rhymes.
