Etimoloji

From Middle High German [Term?], from Latin Mauritius, from the 3rd-century Egyptian Saint. Though Christian in origin, Moritz was a name typical of assimilating Jews in the 19th and earlier 20th centuries. These probably used it as a loose Germanisation of such names as Moses or Mordechai. The name has gained new popularity in Germany since the late 20th century.
