From Achse (“axis”) + -n- + Zeit (“age”), coined by German-Swiss psychiatrist and philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883–1969) in his 1949 book Vom Ursprung und Ziel der Geschichte (“The Origin and Goal of History”).
